Our Opinion of Antigua
From beautiful nature parks, gorgeous beaches, old plantation houses and charming fishing villages, visitors are sure to fall in love with Antigua. The people of this island are very friendly and there are some great all-inclusive resorts on the island, including the popular Sandals Grande Antigua.
Antigua tends to be a bit more pricey than other destinations so its not recommended for those on a limited budget. It is however a great place for couples or honeymooners looking for romance and relaxation.

Antigua (pronounced "an-TEE-gah") is blessed with beaches - 365 according to legend! This vacation destination is definitely a great choice for beach lovers.
This elegant and beautiful island is the choice of travelers and sailors from around the world who appreciate not only the beaches but also the history, high standards of service and sightseeing options.
Cosmopolitan and comfortable, Antigua boasts some of the finest resorts in the Caribbean. Take an island tour and keep your camera ready for the distinctive circular sugar mills dotting the landscape - a reminder of the island's days as a British colony. A must-see is Nelson's Dockyard, once a strategic base for the British navy during Napoleon's time, and now a bustling harbour which welcomes ocean-going yachts, especially during the famous annual Sailing Week Regatta, held in April.
Ashore, varied duty-free shopping in St. John's, the colourful capital, two 18 hole golf courses and three casinos are just some of the options for whiling away the days and nights in Antigua.

"This was our first trip to Antigua and we found it to be a very friendly island.... we rented a car for 2 days and ventured all over the island without any problems.... finding our way was never a problem and neither was safety.... be sure you know the exchange rate between Eastern Carribean and US Dollars, as we did find some of the gas stations would try to take advantage..... we visited many other beaches on the island and found the ones on the West and especially the Southwest side of the island to be the nicest...... the beaches on the north/south shores had much rougher waters, and the beaches on the east coast were grassy and not as clear.....The only inconvenience of travelling to Antigua on this package was having a layover in St Lucia.... it turned what should have been a short flight home to Toronto into a long day..... overall, I would highly recommend this island and would love to return here again"

"Antigua is lovely. The people are very gentle and polite. The island has a population of about 75,000 people. Crime is obviously present but I never felt unsafe. This in not a cheap destination. Prices are just slightly less than one would pay in Canada. I would recommend the circumnavigation boat trip around the whole island. The cost is about $100 USD for the day."

Activities & Sports
An incredible array of water sports can be practised on Antigua. Windsurfing, swimming, snorkeling, water skiing, diving and deep sea fishing are all popular. Several marinas offer boating or sailing excursions. These include the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, Catamaran Marina, Jolly Harbour Marina and St. James's Club Marina. If you would like to attempt something new, then try kite surfing. Here you really solely on the power of the wind to propel your board.
Scuba diving enthusiast will rejoice in Antigua and Barbuda. One of the islands best diving spot is Cape Shirley where large rocks, coral reefs, ledges and overhangs make for a perfect setting. Rendez vous Reef is quite spectacular, as are Willoughby Bay and Cades Bay Reef, officially designated as a national marine park. There are 73 charted shipwrecks in the waters as well.
If you like your sports on the drier side, then you can enjoy a game of tennis, squash, volleyball, cricket, badminton or a horse-back ride. There are two golf courses available, the Cedar Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 70, championship course and the Jolly Harbour Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 71. There is also a small 9-hole course on Barbuda.
Dining & Nightlife
On Antigua there are many types of restaurants to be found with lovely architectural details, such as intimate bistros, seaside terraces and garden-styled courtyards. Seafood and Caribbean restaurants abound. There are also several Italian, French, Indian, Chinese places, and English pubs.
For local delicacies, try Coconut Grove, George, Papa Zouk and Sticky Wicket. If on Barbuda, head to Palm Tree Restaurant where locally caught fish is served with a delicious Creole sauce.
Shopping
Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay offer duty free bargains on items like crystal, china, linen, perfume and jewellery. These two places are located in St-John's. Other shops on the island can be found at Jardine's Court Shopping Plaza or Jolly Harbour Villa Resort & Marina.
The Antigua Public Market is a great experience with local charm. Fresh, tropical fruits and vegetables, spices, tea bushes and local pottery are sold here.
Harmony Hall is a restored plantation that has been turned into art galleries and craft shops, and hosts a craft fair every November.

Antigua Vacation Tips
The departure tax of around US $20, per person, is payable at the airport when leaving the island.
Antiguans drive on the LEFT side of the road. Car rentals are available, as are mopeds and bicycles rentals. To rent a car you will have to purchase a temporary permit ($20).
